Shocking/ A person sets himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington

A man has set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington DC, US emergency services say.

The incident happened at around 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT) on Sunday.

US Secret Service officers extinguished the flames, while the man was taken to the hospital.

The Washington Police Department is now investigating along with the Secret Service and other relevant authorities.

In a statement, police in the US capital said the incident occurred in the "3500 block of International Drive, NW, at approximately 1 p.m." and that officers were dispatched to "assist the United States Secret Service after an individual set himself on fire in front of an embassy in the block".

A video has been shared on social media that purportedly shows the man shouting "Free Palestine" as he burns, US media reports./ CNA
