Another earthquake in the Philippines/ Southern coast hit, residents on alert

A day after two massive earthquakes killed at least eight people in the southern Philippines, another 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the country's southern coast on Saturday, the United States Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at a depth of 59 kilometers, about 10 kilometers from Cagwait town in Surigao del Sur province. 

Earlier on Friday, two massive offshore earthquakes struck the same region in the southern Philippines, just hours apart, leaving at least eight people dead.

The first earthquake was massive, with a magnitude of 7.4, causing landslides and forcing residents of coastal areas to evacuate due to a tsunami fear.

The second was magnitude 6.7 and on the same fault line, the Philippine Trench, near Manay town in Davao Oriental province, said Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology chief Teresito Bacolcol.

It was also not clear whether this latest quake was an aftershock of the twin earthquakes that hit Manay town in the Mindanao region on Friday.

Some coastal residents of the island of Mindanao had been sleeping outside, fearing they would be crushed to death by the aftershocks of the twin earthquakes./CNA
