Starmer in China, the first visit by a British prime minister since 2018

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has arrived in Beijing, China, starting an official visit that will last several days, the first by a British prime minister since 2018.

The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations between the UK and China, including economic cooperation, trade and opportunities for British businesses. Starmer is accompanied by a delegation of around 60 business and cultural leaders on the trip. 

Starmer stressed that perhaps there should be a pragmatic and consistent approach with China, pursuing British national interests and bringing benefits to the people and businesses of the United Kingdom.

The meetings include talks with President Xi Jinping, with whom economic cooperation and issues of common interest will be discussed.

The visit comes at a time of global tensions and debate over relations with China, including concerns about security, surveillance, human rights and economic impact. There are critics of Starmer's counter-visit, arguing that Britain should be wary of the risk of political and strategic distraction due to a focus on relations with Beijing.
