Rubio: New military operation in Venezuela if new leader does not cooperate

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned in the Senate that Washington may carry out another military operation in Venezuela if the new authorities under the leadership of Delcy Rodriguez do not cooperate with US demands.

Rubio cites this as a way to ensure that the Venezuelan government takes measures that please Washington, including opening up the energy sector and stopping support for US allies like Iran or Russia.

This warning comes after a US military operation on January 3, 2026, in which American forces captured former President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, an operation that Washington has justified as part of the war on drugs.

After Maduro's departure, Rodríguez was appointed as interim president and has initiated talks with the US, releasing several political prisoners and advancing diplomatic contacts.

However, American intelligence has expressed doubts about the level of its cooperation with Washington, especially on issues of ties with other countries such as China or Russia. /CNA
