"The situation is very critical"/ Merz: Economic recovery, the

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has described the situation in some parts of the German economy as very critical and has made economic recovery his government's top priority for this year.

In a letter to members of parliament from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Merz shared his priorities for 2026.

In the letter, he also acknowledged that the decisions taken so far have not sufficiently improved the competitiveness of the economy, while acknowledging that the situation in some areas of the economy is very critical. According to him, this year the emphasis will be on making the right political decisions to radically improve the business environment.

Friedrich Merz also points out that labor and energy costs, bureaucratic and tax burdens remain very high.

"Solving these problems will strengthen trust in politics and social cohesion ," he emphasizes.

The Chancellor also reiterates his commitment to continuing support for Ukraine, but also to efforts for a ceasefire that will preserve Ukraine's sovereignty. /CNA
