Former Trump adviser: Not cooperating with Venezuelan opposition is a big

"The Trump administration made a big mistake by not cooperating with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado after the capture of President Nicolás Maduro," former US national security adviser John Bolton told CNN.

"Working with the remnants of the Maduro regime, instead of using the opposition to try to take over the government, is a major turning point and a big mistake," he said.

“Why are we apparently prepared to engage with someone we have previously sanctioned to give legitimacy to an illegitimate regime?” he asked, referring to acting president Delcy Rodríguez.

Responding to claims by the Trump administration that Machado's installation as president would be chaotic because she lacks sufficient support, Bolton said the US should have worked with the opposition before its attack on Venezuela.

"They didn't need to be told that the raid was going to happen, but they should have worked with the opposition, as the Trump administration did in 2018 and 2019, with Juan Guaido, to try to tear apart the Maduro regime, to find people inside who would be prepared to go over to the opposition, including military leaders, so that people could be given amnesty," Bolton said./ CNA
