A powerful country shows interest in Greenland/ Aims to extract rare metals

Japan is planning to send a delegation to Greenland this summer to assess the possibilities of exploiting rare earth metal deposits.

The delegation will consist of representatives from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, as well as JOGMEC officials and executives from Japanese companies. During the visit, they are expected to hold meetings with local government officials to discuss the potential for cooperation in the mining sector.

International interest in Greenland has grown significantly due to its strategic position in the Arctic and significant reserves of rare metals, which are essential for the production of modern technologies, batteries, electric vehicles and advanced electronic devices.

The autonomous island, which belongs to Denmark, returned to the international spotlight after Donald Trump returned as president to the White House.

In January, the US administration announced that Trump was considering ways to secure control over Greenland, an idea that raised concerns among the US's European NATO allies. Later, rhetoric about possible military action was replaced by diplomatic efforts.

The planned visit of the Japanese delegation is considered an important step in the global race to secure strategic sources of rare metals, as Greenland continues to attract the interest of major economic and geopolitical powers. /CNA
