Beyond deportation and prison
Street revolt and political transformation 1. The cries ...
Albanian citizens who have taken to the boulevards these days, supported by several small parties with the slogan: "We are the opposition" should be a little more ambitious.
Because the energy being generated in society today is too great to be spent on a battle for second place.
If their objective is simply to replace the traditional opposition as the second political force, then they are setting themselves a ceiling before the race even begins. A movement born of civic revolt cannot have as its maximum aspiration to become a manager of discontent. It should aim for power, not the role of critical spectator.
In fact, an obvious contradiction appears here.
On one side we hear the cry: "We are the opposition." On the other side we hear: "Your time is up!".
But if their time is up, then we are not just talking about the old opposition. We are talking about the entire political class that has dominated the Albanian transition. And if that is the case, then the claim is no longer for second place, but for first place.
Citizens do not protest to replace one opposition with another. They protest when they feel that the system is no longer working. When this happens, the demand is not for rotation within the establishment, but for a change in the establishment.
Therefore, citizens and new parties that have been present since day one in the protest must choose.
Either they are an alternative that aims to govern Albania and replace the entire worn-out political elite, or they are simply a new variant of the old opposition. They cannot be both.
The cry "Your time is up!" is a statement of power. While the cry "We are the opposition" is a statement of position.
And when a political movement (protests and new parties) is not clear whether it is fighting to win or simply to replace the loser, it risks its energy being dissipated before it reaches its objective.
