 Gunfire erupts in Caracas amid political tensions

Gunshots were heard on Monday evening over the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, at a time of high security tension following the US attack and capture of President Nicolás Maduro.

CNN-verified video confirms gunfire, amid reports of confusion among security forces near the Miraflores presidential palace. A resident of the Urdaneta Avenue area, near the presidential palace, told CNN that he heard gunshots.

Venezuela's Ministry of Communications and Information said police shot down drones that were flying without permission over Caracas, stressing that there was no confrontation and that the situation in the country is completely calm.

A White House official told CNN that the US is closely monitoring the situation, but stressed that it is not involved in the incident.

According to intercepted conversations between regime-linked paramilitary groups, heard by CNN, the shootings are believed to have been the result of a misunderstanding and confusion between various security forces operating near Miraflores. Members of the groups known as colectivos initially reported confrontations, but later said the situation had calmed down and was under control./ CNA
