The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, has been fired after a vote of confidence.

The congressman was dismissed with 216 votes in favor and 210 votes against.

Ultraconservatives rebelled after he struck a deal Saturday with Senate Democrats to fund government agencies.

Florida Republican Matt Gaetz, a Trump ally, filed a motion to impeach McCarthy.

He accused the speaker of making a secret deal with the White House to continue funding for Ukraine amid negotiations to avoid a partial government shutdown over the weekend.

McCarthy on the other hand denies it.

At a private meeting of Republican lawmakers Tuesday night after losing his job, McCarthy told colleagues he had no plans to run for speaker again.

He later attacked his political enemy, Mr. Gaetz, accusing him of seeking attention.

"You know it was personal," Mr. McCarthy said at a news conference, "it had nothing to do with spending."

He only became speaker in January after 15 rounds of voting after Mr Gaetz and other rightists refused to back him.
