NATO chief in Davos: We are working to resolve the Greenland issue

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated on January 21 that the only way to resolve the crisis over Greenland is "prudent diplomacy," adding that he is working "behind the scenes" on the issue.

The head of the Western military alliance, who is attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, refused to comment on US President Donald Trump's intentions to take control of the island, stressing that diplomacy is more important than public statements.

"I assure you that I am working on this issue behind the scenes ," the NATO chief said during a panel in Davos.

He reiterated that he will not make a public statement, as, according to him, "the only way to resolve the crisis is through well-thought-out diplomacy."

Rutte is the only leader who has so far confirmed that he will meet with Trump on the sidelines of the forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Speaking at the panel, Rutte stressed that the United States remains committed to the alliance, but added that America needs "a secure Europe and a secure Arctic."

He stressed that, regarding the Arctic, he agrees with the American president.

"We must protect the Arctic from Russian and Chinese influence ," said Mark Rutte.

He also urged Europe and the US to divert disagreements over Greenland from the war in Ukraine, which Russia started nearly four years ago.

"Focusing on Ukraine should be our top priority, it is essential for European and US security ," he said.

Trump has previously argued that the US needs Greenland to guarantee American national security against Washington's rivals, Russia and China.

Greenland, a Danish territory with about 57,000 inhabitants, is not an independent member of NATO, but is covered by Denmark's membership in the military alliance. An attempt to take control of Greenland would be the first time in NATO history that an ally has violated the territory of another member state. /REL
