"The international order is changing"/ Von der Leyen: Europe is prepared to act if necessary

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said in a speech to the European Parliament that Europe must accelerate its efforts for independence. Von der Leyen said that a major change is taking place in the international order that is expected to be permanent.

"We now live in a world defined by raw power. In this increasingly lawless world, Europe needs its own levers of power ," said Von der Leyen.

Referring to rising tensions with Trump over his attempt to buy Greenland, she said that threatening additional tariffs for security reasons is wrong.

She adds that European leaders will meet on Thursday to discuss its response to the US president's threatened tariffs.

"Europe prefers dialogue and solutions, but we are fully prepared to act if necessary with unity, urgency and determination," said the EC President.

She reiterated Europe's position that the future of Greenland is for Greenlanders alone to decide. /CNA
