EU aims for new restrictions on drone technology exports to Iran

The European Union proposed on Tuesday to ban the export of more drone and missile technology to Iran, following its deadly crackdown on protesters, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

"Europe stands in full solidarity with the brave women and men of Iran, who are risking their lives to seek freedom for themselves and for future generations," von der Leyen wrote in X.

"Today, we are proposing to ban additional exports of vital technologies for drones and missiles," she added.

Von der Leyen said the EU is also preparing further sanctions against those responsible for the "continued and brutal repression" of the protests that rocked the Islamic Republic.

The weeks-long protests were the biggest challenge the Iranian leadership has faced in recent years.

The full extent of the consequences of the crackdown has gradually become known, as Iran continues to be in total terror without internet and communication for 11 days now.

Despite difficulties in accessing information, the non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights says it has verified that 3,428 protesters have been killed by security forces.

According to local media and observers, authorities have continued to make arrests following the wave of demonstrations, despite international pressure.

The EU has already sanctioned several hundred Iranian officials for suppressing previous protest movements and for Tehran's support for Russia's war in Ukraine.

The bloc has also banned the export to Iran of a number of components that can be used in the country's production of drones and missiles./REL
