LDK calls party assembly/ Abdixhiku expected to seek vote of confidence

The Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) will hold its party assembly on January 31, where party leader Lumir Abdixhiku will seek a vote of confidence from delegates, party official Besian Mustafa announced on Monday.

Mustafa told reporters that the decision to hold the Assembly was made during a meeting of the party's Presidency in Pristina.

The LDK, the oldest party in Kosovo, is experiencing one of the most difficult periods in its history, after the December 28 snap elections brought its second-worst result ever.

Several party members, including the deputy leader, Hykmete Bajrami, called for Abdixhiku's removal, after the LDK came in third, winning only about 13 percent of the vote.

Mustafa said that LDK members held "an almost 4-hour, open and democratic discussion, expanding the debate on every possible point and also analyzing the results of the December 28 elections."

Abdixhiku said days ago that he had offered his resignation and that he would only leave if the party assembly voted to dismiss him.

Therefore, Mustafa emphasized on Monday that Abdixhiku – who took over the party leadership in 2021 – will seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly on January 31.

"This is a form that the party chairman Lumir Abdixhiku himself is requesting. In this Assembly, he will request a vote of confidence. So, the Assembly, which has 355 delegates, will decide on this request whether they will still have confidence in the chairman Lumir Abdixhiku. So, it is a request for a vote of confidence," said Mustafa.

Asked whether there will be a competition for a new party leader if Abdixhiku is dismissed, Mustafa said it is too early to talk about this.

"There must be another process to come up with other candidacies to have an electoral process in LDK. Now we are in the confidence vote. We will see the result of the confidence vote first," said Mustafa./REL
