With Trump on board/ Air Force One suffers a defect, returns to Washington

Donald Trump's plane, Air Force One, was forced to abort its flight to Switzerland on Tuesday after a minor electrical problem.

The US president boarded another plane, an Air Force C-32, a modified Boeing 757 normally used for travel to smaller airports, and continued his journey to Davos for the Economic Forum.

Caroline Leavitt, the White House spokeswoman, said the decision to return to Washington, D.C., was made immediately after the crew discovered the defect.

A White House reporter traveling with the president said the lights in the cabin of Air Force One went out briefly after the plane took off, although no further explanation was given.

The two aging planes that serve as Air Force One have been in service for nearly four decades, and Boeing's efforts to offer replacements have been hampered by repeated delays.

Controversy erupted in 2025 when the Qatari ruling family gifted Trump a luxury Boeing 747-8 to add to the presidential fleet, a gesture that attracted widespread attention. The plane is currently being retrofitted to meet U.S. safety standards./ CNA
