Peace talks/ Witkoff to meet with Putin

US special envoy Steve Witkoff will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin for another round of talks on ending the war in Ukraine.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, and Witkoff confirmed that the discussions will be related to the Ukraine-Russia peace negotiations. He also plans to meet with the Ukrainian side.

Witkoff told CNBC that there has been a lot of progress in the last six to eight weeks and said he hopes good news will be announced on the matter soon.

Numerous attempts to convince Russia and Ukraine to agree to a ceasefire have failed, but the engagement of the United States of America has helped bring both sides to the negotiating table.

Deep obstacles to a peace deal are Russia's demands that Ukraine hand over its eastern Donbas region and Ukraine's demands for security guarantees from Western partners to prevent Russia from re-invading Ukraine in the future. /CNA
