US seizes enriched uranium from Venezuela

The US has announced that it has removed highly enriched uranium (HEU) from Venezuela, in what the US Department of Energy (DOE) called a victory for America and the world.

In a statement to the media, the DOE said it had completed the “removal of all remaining enriched uranium from a legacy research reactor” in the South American nation and had transferred it to the US for processing and reuse. 

The amount removed was 13.5 kilograms, while it is reported that the operation was carried out together with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure nuclear safety in the region.

"This action sends another signal to the world for a restored and renewed Venezuela ," the statement said.

Washington resumed relations with Caracas after U.S. forces arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January on narcoterrorism charges. The removal of the uranium was coordinated with Venezuela's Ministry of Science and Technology, the DOE statement said.

US officials argue that any civilian HEU stockpile, regardless of size, poses a long-term threat of theft, diversion or trafficking and should eventually be removed from circulation.

Venezuela's transfer closely resembles dozens of similar HEU removal operations conducted over the past three decades as part of routine U.S.- and IAEA-backed nonproliferation programs targeting civilian research reactors. /CNA
