USA: Iran, the main state sponsor of terrorism

Iran remained the leading state sponsor of global terrorism last year, being involved in supporting terrorist recruitment, financing and plots across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, the US State Department said in its 2022 terrorism report. which was published on December 1.

In the Middle East, Iran continued to support Hezbollah, a group designated a terrorist organization by Washington in 1997, the report said, adding that Tehran provided weapons to Hamas and other Palestinian groups designated as terrorists by the US.

"These groups were responsible for numerous deadly attacks that originated in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank," the report said.

Tehran has also supported extremist groups in Bahrain, Iraq and Syria, through Iran's Revolutionary Guard Quds Force (IRGC-QF), to provide support to terrorist organizations in order to create unrest in the region, according to the report.

Iran has repeatedly instigated and plotted attacks on the United States, including against former US officials, in retaliation for the January 2020 death of Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani.

The US Department of Justice said in 2022 that it had foiled an IRGC-QF-led plot to kill former national security adviser John Bolton and arrested an Iranian accused of the plot.

According to the report, in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, members of al-Qaeda, the Islamic State group, and regional terrorist groups were still active in 2022, although the Taliban were committed to not allowing extremists to use their country to carry out attacks against the United States and its allies, after the withdrawal of American forces in August 2021.

The report notes that "the United States has not yet decided whether to recognize the Taliban or other entities as the government of Afghanistan," and says that the Taliban harbored an al-Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, in Kabul before that he was killed by an American airstrike in July last year./ REL
