Public interest over political interests/ What role does free opinion play?

Public interest over political interests/ What role does free opinion play?

One of the biggest deceptions sold to the public is the idea that public affairs are the work of experts, ministers, and MPs. No. They are the work of citizens first and foremost, because the citizen pays the bill for every bad decision.

When a tax is increased, it is not a technical debate. When an urban plan is broken, it is not just a conflict between developers and the municipality. When a public hospital fails, it is not a statistic. There are concrete consequences on people's lives. This is precisely why opinion on public issues should not be left in the hands of a minority that uses the microphone as property.

Participation does not mean talking about everything without knowledge. It means demanding accountability, not accepting the ready-made version, and understanding that public silence is often the best ally of abuse. A society that only comments in cafes and does not bring concerns to public debate, forgives a lot to the authorities.

The problem with bought opinion

This is the elephant in the room. In many cases, opinion is not directly censored. It is bought, coddled, fed with access, favors, exposure, and proximity to decision-making centers. This makes it even harder for the public to understand where analysis ends and bargaining begins.

The captured opinionator rarely seems captured. He speaks calmly, in a professional tone, with rounded sentences. But he avoids strong names, relativizes the next scandal and asks for patience precisely when the alarm was needed. At first glance, he seems reasonable. In fact, it is part of the mitigation mechanism.

This is why media with a critical nerve remains indispensable. Not to shout louder than others, but to not accept compromise as the norm. An editorial office like CNA, when it sees itself as an unfiltered voice, enters precisely this clash: between the public interest and the scandal-suppression industry.

What does the Albanian public debate need today?

It needs less theater and more responsibility. Less figure and more document. Less staged opinion and more analysis that stands the test of time. It doesn't need more loudmouths. It needs more voices that don't back down when the names get big.

It also needs memory. Many scandals in Albania are not closed, they are simply replaced by another scandal. This creates public fatigue and a lowering of the reaction threshold. A useful opinion does not only follow new events. It returns to old files, to unfulfilled promises, to those responsible who have not yet been held accountable.

In the end, opinion on public issues has value only when it serves the citizen and not the chair. When it worries the government, not when it entertains it. When it illuminates what others want to keep in the shadows. And if public debate is to breathe differently, it will not come from regular silence, but from a voice that refuses to be silenced. /CNA
