The Russian court declares the LGBT movement "extremist".

The Supreme Court of Russia has declared the LGBT movement "extremist".

The court session took place behind closed doors.

The court announced that it has approved the request of the Ministry of Justice to call the "international LGBT movement" extremist, banning its activities in Russia.

Such a decision has not been well received by human rights activists.

Marie Struthers, director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at Amnesty International, called the decision shameful.

"This shameful and absurd place represents a new front in the Russian authorities' campaign against the LGBTI community. The decision risks having as a consequence the banning of all LGBTI organizations, with much greater violations of freedom of expression and free and peaceful assembly, as well as the right not to be discriminated against. It will have an impact on many people," said Marie Struthers, director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at Amnesty International./ CNA
