Pressure on Starmer grows as 70 Labour MPs demand his resignation

Pressure on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer increased on Monday when four deputy ministers resigned and more than 70 Labour lawmakers publicly called for his resignation.

In a speech to party loyalists in London, Starmer had called on both his party and voters to stand with him and avoid a leadership contest that he said would only bring chaos, but his speech appeared to have little impact in defusing the tide of tensions.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and other cabinet ministers had urged the prime minister to consider setting a deadline for his departure, while Labor lawmakers went public to express their displeasure over one of Labor's worst defeats in last week's local elections.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper told Starmer he must oversee an orderly transition of power. Four senior ministers said they were resigning, believing Starmer, 63, was not the right man to lead the Labour Party into the next national election, scheduled for 2029.

Starmer quickly announced new appointments to fill a number of vacant positions. However, Starmer's attempt to convince his party and voters that he could be bolder in tackling the many problems that have gripped Britain since he won a large majority in 2024 appeared to fail to win the support of the very people he was aiming for. /CNA
