19 reported killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza

The Civil Defense Agency in Gaza reported that 19 people were killed on September 5th as a result of a series of Israeli airstrikes in and around Gaza City - a settlement that the Israeli army wants to take under full control.

The agency's spokesman, Mahmoud Bassal, said the attacks hit buildings and tents housing displaced Palestinians in several neighborhoods and on the outskirts of the city, where the United Nations says more than a million people are facing famine.

Israel has intensified its bombardment of Gaza City since it declared it would launch an offensive to take it under full control.

Israeli army spokesman Nadav Shoshani stated a day earlier that there would be no announcement of the launch of the offensive due to "preserving the element of surprise."

Meanwhile, another spokesman said that Israel already controls 40 percent of the city.

Israel expects the new offensive to force about a million people to move towards the southern Gaza Strip.

The Gaza War began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas – the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union – attacked southern Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people and kidnapping 251 others.
