Zelensky: If Kiev cedes territory to Russia, Europe could be attacked afterwards

Russia will use Donbas to further invade Ukraine in a new offensive and may attack Europe afterwards, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with the French newspaper Le Point.  

"If, tomorrow, we somehow leave Donbass, which will not happen, we will open an undefended space for Putin, near a city with a million and a half inhabitants: Kharkiv. He would also occupy the industrial center of Dnipro. One thing is for sure, we have not lost. We must see the situation clearly: the second largest army in the world has come to destroy us, our history and our identity. And this is not their first attempt. Several times in history, the Russian Empire has struck at the independence of our people," Zelensky said.

Zelensky noted that the same could be done to attack the rest of Europe if Ukraine fell into the hands of Russian soldiers.

"If Putin were to take control of our entire country, he would use it as a springboard in the same way. Whether he will do this or not will depend on the strength of Europe," Zelensky said.

Zelensky noted that security guarantees from Europe alone are sufficient to contain a Russian offensive, but that guarantees from the US are necessary to end Russia's aggression and prevent a new war./ CNA
