Death toll from Afghanistan earthquake rises to 2,205

Hundreds of bodies have been pulled from collapsed homes in Afghanistan after a powerful earthquake last week, bringing the total death toll to over 2,200, a Taliban government spokesman said on Thursday.

The 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck several mountainous provinces in the east of the country on Sunday evening, flattening villages and trapping people under rubble.

Most of the casualties have been recorded in Kunar, where many residents live in steep river valleys, separated by high mountains.

Taliban spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat, who announced the updated death toll of 2,205, said search and rescue efforts were continuing.

"Tents have been set up for people and first aid and emergency supplies are being distributed," he said.

The difficult terrain is making the job of rescue teams more difficult. Taliban authorities have used helicopters and sent soldiers by air to help survivors. Aid workers say they are forced to walk for hours to reach villages blocked by landslides and rock falls.

Funding cuts are also affecting the response to the crisis.

The Norwegian Refugee Council said it has fewer than 450 staff in Afghanistan, down from 1,100 in 2023 — when the country's last major earthquake struck. The council has only one warehouse available and no emergency stock.

"We will need to buy items once we secure funding, but that could take weeks and people need them now," said Maisam Shafiey, the council's communications advisor in Afghanistan.

"We only have $100,000 to support emergency response efforts. That leaves an immediate gap of $1.9 million," he added.

Humanitarian organizations have called this disaster a crisis within a crisis.

Afghanistan was already facing the consequences of climate change, particularly drought, with a weak economy and the return of about 2 million Afghans from neighboring countries./ REL
