European Environment Agency Report: Environmental Degradation Threatens Way of Life

Environmental degradation threatens the European way of life, with three-quarters of eurozone businesses dependent on ecosystem services, according to the latest report by the European Environment Agency.

The five-year assessment covering 38 European countries warns that water scarcity affects 34% of Europeans, with agriculture identified as the most serious threat to ecosystem health.

CO2 emissions from energy production are projected to approach zero by 2035. Waste management remains problematic. The recycling rate fell to 17.3% in 2023, well below the European average. Packaging recycling fell from 54.1% in 2021 to 43.4% in 2023.

The report notes that the climate crisis is reshaping energy consumption. The report notes that as heating needs decrease and cooling demand increases, this shift puts additional pressure on the energy system, underscoring the importance of affordable electricity. The report warned that high energy prices hinder economic competitiveness. /CNA
