The British government declares a state of drought in some parts of the country

The UK government on Friday officially declared a state of drought in parts of England, following months of scant rainfall and record temperatures in recent weeks.

The British government's Environment Agency said the "drought threshold has been reached" in eight regions of England as the report said the country was experiencing its driest season since 1935.

Dry weather and high temperatures have seen France also face a record drought as it battles huge fires.
