Snakebites: About 50,000 deaths each year in India

In India, around 50,000 people die from snakebites every year, making the country one of the most vulnerable in the world to this problem.

This figure represents approximately half of snakebite deaths worldwide each year.

Some studies suggest that between 2000 and 2019, there may have been about 1.2 million deaths in India due to bites, an average of about 58,000 per year.

Many deaths occur in rural and village areas, where people work in agriculture or move around in natural environments where snakes are common.

Challenges to treatment include limited access to antivenom, poor medical infrastructure, and lack of timely treatment, which often leads to serious complications or loss of life.

Health organizations and the government have launched national plans to reduce snakebite mortality, including awareness-raising efforts and improving medical services. /CNA
