Trump: Talks with Cuba could lead to a deal

US President Donald Trump said late Sunday that Washington is in talks with Cuban authorities. Going a step further, Trump claimed that these talks could lead to an agreement.

"We're talking to the Cubans, senior officials in Cuba. We'll see what happens. I think we'll reach an agreement with Cuba," the US president said.

Following the US military intervention in Venezuela, Cuba's main ally, Trump has repeatedly threatened the leadership in Havana, which he has described as "failed" and "unstable", stressing that they no longer have Venezuela to support them.

Trump, who halted Venezuelan oil shipments to Cuba after the arrest of Nicolas Maduro in early January, signed an executive order on Thursday that says Washington can impose tariffs, of an unspecified amount, on countries that sell oil to Havana, claiming that Cuba poses a threat to US national security./CNA
