Documentary "Melania" scores staggering profits/Best debut in the last decade

The documentary about US First Lady Melania Trump has exceeded expectations and has made huge profits after its release in cinemas.

The documentary had its best debut in nearly a decade, earning $7 million in its first weekend of release. It reportedly cost far more than a typical documentary, $40 million to make and $35 million to promote.

Filmed in the weeks leading up to President Donald Trump's inauguration in 2025, the documentary offers a stylized perspective on Melania Trump's role as First Lady.

Ticket sales were driven by women and moviegoers over the age of 55, who accounted for 70% or more of the revenue. In addition, rural theaters represented 46% of total ticket revenue, according to data from EntTelligence, which also estimates that 600,000 viewers saw the film over the weekend.

Documentaries are not typically big ticket-seller, with most releases over the past 10 years earning between $10 million and $20 million worldwide. Documentaries and concert films by popular music artists often exceed these figures due to their built-in fan bases. /CNA
