Kiev thanks Elon Musk for blocking Starlink in Russia

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mikhailo Fedorov today thanked Elon Musk and his company SpaceX for taking measures that prevented Russia from using its Starlink satellite communications systems to send drones over Ukraine.

Mikhailo Fedorov said that Kiev is working in very close cooperation with SpaceX on important measures in the near future. In his post on “X”, he explained that these measures include the implementation of a registration system for Starlink terminals operating from Ukrainian territory.

“Ukraine, together with Starlink, has already taken the first steps that have yielded quick results in stopping Russian drones. The next step is to implement a system that will allow only authorized terminals to operate on the territory of Ukraine. In the coming days, we will share instructions for Ukrainian users to register their Starlink terminals for verification. Unverified terminals will be deactivated. The registration process will be simple, fast, and user-friendly. Detailed instructions will be published soon. Thank you Starlink/SpaceX for your cooperation and proactive support to Ukrainians ,” Fedorov’s post said.

On Thursday, January 29, the Defense Minister announced that Kiev had contacted SpaceX after the appearance of Russian drones equipped with Starlink connections over Ukrainian cities and that it had sought solutions with Elon Musk's teams. According to Ukrainian intelligence, the Russian military purchased the Starlink stations through parallel channels, such as imports from third countries, instead of being officially sold by Elon Musk's company. /CNA
