Mine collapses in Democratic Republic of Congo, killing over 200 people

More than 200 people have died in a mine collapse in the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to foreign media reports, the mine in the town of Rubaya collapsed due to heavy rains.

Women, children and artisanal miners, those not formally employed by a mining company, are among those killed in the mine collapse. About 20 survivors are said to be receiving treatment in hospital.

Governor Erasto Bahati Musanga, who was appointed by the M23 rebels after they seized large swaths of territory in North Kivu, visited survivors of the incident on Friday.

Rubaya is one of a number of towns across North Kivu under the control of M23, who, according to international observers, are supported by neighboring Rwanda.

The mines in Rubaya contain about 15% of the world's coltan supply and half of the Democratic Republic of Congo's total deposits. The metallic ore contains tantalum, which is used to produce high-performance capacitors in a wide range of electronic devices, making it highly sought after around the world.

Since 2024, the M23 rebels have been in control of the mines. The UN has accused the group of imposing taxes on the mining sector for their own benefit. /CNA
