UN chief warns: Organization at risk of financial collapse by July 2026

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has sent a letter to member states saying that the UN is at risk of imminent financial collapse due to non-payment of contributions, as well as a budget rule that forces the organization to return to countries funds it has not spent, despite not having received them at all.

He warned that the crisis is deepening, threatening the UN's ability to implement its programs, and that the situation is expected to worsen in the near future.

The UN is facing a cash shortage after the United States, the largest contributor with 22% of the regular budget, has reduced voluntary funding and refused mandatory payments to the organization's budget and peacekeeping.

Guterres said that if member states do not pay in full and on time, or if the UN's financial rules are revised, the organization could run out of money by July 2026 and be unable to implement the 2026 budget. /CNA
