Vu?i?: Compulsory military service will come into effect in December 2026 or

Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? announced on Thursday that compulsory military service in the country will come into effect in December of this year or in March 2027. The decision to start military service, he said, depends on the readiness of military capacities and facilities.

"We will make this decision soon, within the next one or two months, and we will take it to Parliament and start registering military recruits ," Vu?i? said, after a meeting with military leaders on the state and analysis of the capabilities of the Serbian Armed Forces for 2025.

Military service will last 75 days, according to him.

"We need to get all the equipment ready. We have enough weapons and boots, but there are some things that are not yet fully ready ," he said.

He added that the renovation of recruitment centers, the improvement and renovation of clinics, and other things are needed.

"These are important questions because we want to be prepared for this and for these young people to spend their military service in the best conditions. To gain the necessary responsibility and seriousness, as well as an attitude towards patriotism," Vu?i? said.

The introduction of compulsory military service must be approved by the Serbian Parliament. Government representatives have repeatedly announced the return of military service in recent years.

The idea was materialized in January 2024. Then the General Staff of the Serbian Army launched an initiative and proposed to the president the return of military service.

Vu?i? then, in September of the same year, signed an agreement to return compulsory military service to Serbia. Since its abolition on January 1, 2011, military service has been voluntary.

Neighboring Croatia also voted to bring back compulsory military service in October 2025. Among the countries that have not abolished compulsory military service are Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Austria, Turkey, Estonia, Greece, Cyprus, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. /REL
