EU considers entry ban on former Russian soldiers who fought in Ukraine

BRUSSELS — The European Union is considering a proposal to ban entry into the EU for former Russian soldiers who took part in the war in Ukraine, amid concerns about the security risks they could pose. The idea was raised by Estonia during a meeting of foreign ministers on Thursday.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna argued that a large number of Russian former fighters could try to enter Europe after the war and that Europe should have a coordinated policy to put them on ban lists.

“There can be no road from Bucha to Brussels,” Tsahkna said, referring to the crimes committed by the Russian military in Ukraine.

Estonia has already imposed a permanent entry ban on 261 Russian soldiers who participated in the invasion of Ukraine.

At the end of the meeting, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas said that many member states have expressed support for this initiative and that the proposal will continue to be reviewed to test the readiness of all EU countries.

"This poses a clear security risk for Europe," Kallas added./ CNA
