Kallas: Putin must make concessions before direct talks with Europe

The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, has warned that the European Union should not start direct negotiations with Russia without concrete concessions from President Vladimir Putin.

Her statement comes as several European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron and Giorgia Meloni, have publicly supported the idea of ??reengaging with the Kremlin as part of the Russia-Ukraine peace process.

“We cannot go to Russia to ask for talks without anything concrete from their side,” Kallas said after a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels. She stressed that the EU’s energy should be focused on pressure on Moscow, including new sanctions planned for the fourth anniversary of the war on February 24, and not on talks that could legitimize Putin.

Luxembourg Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel said that discussions with Moscow should remain on the table and the EU should be ready for any form of representation, whether from him or any other leader, stressing that talks could also take place in the background.
