Destruction after storm "Christine"/ Portuguese government announces

The Portuguese government has announced a €2.5 billion reconstruction and aid package after the devastating storm Christine hit the country last week, leaving five dead.

Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also announced that the state of alert, which has been imposed in many parts of the country, will be extended until February 8, as more rain is expected in the coming days.

This measure, initially imposed on Thursday, allows authorities to implement security measures and coordinate emergency response efforts.

"Some areas will face more serious situations that may even require evacuation," the country's prime minister warned at a press conference after an emergency government meeting.

The Portuguese meteorological agency IPMA has put the entire territory of Portugal on alert due to heavy rainfall accompanied by winds of up to 100 km/h.

According to current weather forecasts, the damage could be considerable, warned the head of Civil Protection, Mario Silvestro.

The Civil Protection sent messages to mobile phones across most of the country to warn of the risk of flooding. /CNA
