'Trevi Fountain' in Rome / Tourist fee starts today

The city of Rome has decided that tourists will pay a fee of 2 euros to get closer to the famous Trevi Fountain.

From today, February 2, 2026, visitors must pay this fee to descend the stairs to the area near the water basin, the place where coins are usually thrown for luck, while observing the fountain from the square above continues to be free.

The purpose of this fee is not to raise money, but to reduce crowds, better manage the flow of visitors, and stop people eating pizza or ice cream on the monument, which according to authorities does not give the fountain the proper respect.

This idea was discussed as early as 2024 as part of Rome's strategy for sustainable tourism.

Before the decision, projects had also been put in place to limit and organize the queue of people around the fountain, due to overcrowding and the influx of people frequenting the area.

The payment schedule varies by day: the general schedule is from 9:00 to 22:00, but there are also variations for other days. After 22:00, entry near the fountain is free.

The projected revenue from the fee is expected to be around €6.5 million per year, which will be used for improvements and maintenance of the city's cultural heritage. Residents of Rome are exempt from this fee, as are several other places with a new fee in the city. /CNA
