Rubio's prediction: We could have a permanent US diplomatic mission in Venezuela

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he envisions a permanent US diplomatic presence in Venezuela in the near future, just weeks after ousted President Nicolas Maduro was captured following a US military invasion of Caracas.

"We have a team on the ground assessing the situation and we believe we can open a U.S. diplomatic mission in the near future, which will allow us to get real-time information and interact," Rubio said at a hearing before the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.

He also emphasized that the United States has established a respectful and productive line of communication with Venezuela's interim leaders.

Nicolas Maduro was arrested along with his wife on January 3, during a spectacular US military operation in Caracas. He was taken and held in custody in New York, as US authorities intend to try him for "drug trafficking".

Maduro's former deputy was sworn in as interim president on February 5, after US President Donald Trump said Washington intends to dictate decisions made in Venezuela until further notice. /CNA
