The United Nations has warned that the political crisis in Niger and the sanctions imposed on the coup regime risk causing "catastrophic" humanitarian effects.

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, said it has reviewed the emergency plan for Niger since the July 26 military coup ousted the president, Mohamed Bazoum.

"The ongoing political crisis, with no solution in sight, is generating uncertainty and concern as the country continues to face constant attacks by armed groups, particularly near the borders with Mali and Burkina Faso," said Emmanuel Gignac, UNHCR representative in Niger.

With violence and attacks that have forced the displacement of over 20,000 people in the past month alone, he warned that "the situation has increased the risks for the protection of refugees and asylum seekers".

Gignac said the border closures and sanctions imposed by the Economic Committee of West African States (ECOWAS) on the new military leaders had already pushed up the prices of food and other products.

Particularly worrying, according to him, are the sanctions that currently have no exceptions for humanitarian issues. This, according to Gignac, could lead to severe shortages of food and other necessary aid.

Although the full impact of the sanctions is not yet being felt, Gignac warned that after a while "if they are not lifted... we will not be able to send the right humanitarian aid, which could have catastrophic impacts."

UNHCR said nearly 350,000 Nigeriens have already been internally displaced. This UN agency said that so far there are no reports of large population movements from Nigeria to neighboring countries./ REL
