The European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, has spoken out against the creation of a European army, stating that it was an extremely dangerous idea.

Speaking at a security conference in Norway, Kallas said the top priority in any military crisis should be to maintain a clear command structure. She said the creation of a separate European army alongside NATO forces could lead to confusion during global crises.

"If you are already part of NATO, then you cannot create a separate army in addition to the army you already have. Because in crisis conditions, what is most important is the chain of command: who gives orders to whom. And if you have the European army and then you have the NATO army, that is extremely dangerous. That is why I say that we need to strengthen European defense, which is also part of NATO. It is really complementary to NATO. Let's not throw NATO out the window ," Kallas said.

Kallas rejected claims of divisions within NATO, insisting that cooperation between the alliance and the EU had strengthened.

"I don't agree that there is a divide. We are trying to help our member states increase their defense spending and also do this together with all the other member states and also with countries like Norway, so that we are ready. And 23 members of the European Union are also part of NATO, so we are actually cooperating with NATO. It is in addition to what NATO is doing, and we really work side by side ," she said.

Asked if she agreed with Rutte's stance that Europe could not be independent without the US, Kallas admitted that there was still work to be done in this regard.

"Well, for now the situation is like that, but we are working to be more independent also when it comes to security, because it is clear that our weaknesses are our weaknesses. That is why we are working to invest more in defense, also in capabilities, and to consider it European, not just national ," Kallas said. /CNA
