Mandelson's Epstein links/ Starmer orders urgent investigation

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has ordered an urgent investigation into links between London's former ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, and Jeffrey Epstein, while the politician was a government minister.

According to a Downing Street spokesman, Starmer believes that Lord Mandelson should be stripped of his title as a peer and no longer sit in the upper house of parliament, the House of Lords.

The review, which will be led by Cabinet Secretary Chris Wormald, comes after newly released US documents revealed Lord Mandelson's link to the financier convicted of sexual abuse.

The spokesman said the Cabinet Secretary would review all available information regarding Peter Mandelson's contacts with Jeffrey Epstein during his time as a government minister.

Bank records released by US authorities on Friday suggest that in 2009, Lord Mandelson, who was then business secretary, sent Epstein an economic briefing intended for then-leader Gordon Brown, captioning it: "An interesting note has been sent to the Prime Minister."

The documents show Epstein made $75,000 (£55,000) in payments to Lord Mandelson in three separate transactions of $25,000 in 2003 and 2004. The former ambassador was removed from his post in September, after being appointed by the Starmer government at the end of 2024. Lord Mandelson apologised to Epstein's victims in January and for maintaining his friendship with the convicted sex abuse financier. /CNA
