European Union legally approves ban on Russian gas imports

The European Union has imposed a permanent and legally binding ban on natural gas imports from Russia as part of its strategy to end energy dependence on Moscow.

This measure is part of the REPowerEU plan, which aims to make the EU more autonomous and strong in the field of energy, by reducing the political and economic influence of Russian gas supplies on European markets.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia will be completely banned by the end of 2026.

Gas imports through pipelines will be gradually stopped and will end by the fall of 2027.

This ban has become legally valid after being approved by EU member states by qualified majority and aims to 'turn off the tap' on supplies from Russia to curb the use of energy as a tool of international political pressure, as well as to stop the indirect financing of Moscow's aggression through energy revenues.

This is a major step towards the EU's energy independence and the effort to reduce Russia's influence on the continent's economic and political security. /CNA
