Mainstream Media Calls on US to 'Stop Prosecuting Julian Assange'

The United States should end its prosecution of Julian Assange, major US and European media outlets that have cooperated with the WikiLeaks founder said, citing press freedom concerns.

"This indictment sets a dangerous precedent and threatens to undermine America's First Amendment and freedom of the press," the editors-in-chief of the Guardian, New York Times, Le Monde, Der Spiegel and El Pais said in an open letter.

Assange spent seven years in the Ecuadorian embassy before being jailed in 2019 for parole violations. He remains in a London prison, where he is awaiting a decision on his extradition. If extradited to the US, he could face up to 175 years in prison.

His defense team has taken the case to the High Court in London, as it tries to prevent Assange's extradition.

"Publication is not a crime", said the media in their open letter published on Monday./ REL
