Regarding possible security guarantees that European countries want to offer for Ukraine, Lavrov spoke of "foreign interference in parts of Ukraine." The AFP news agency reports that during a visit by his Indian counterpart to Moscow, Lavrov had said that this would be "completely unacceptable" for Russia. Lavrov insisted on Wednesday (20.08.) for Russia's participation in the talks on security guarantees. The Kremlin supports "reliable security guarantees" for Ukraine, Lavrov stressed. However, talks on security issues without Russia lead "nowhere."

Russia aims to expand its nuclear defense shield

Russia wants to expand its nuclear weapons shield system. The reason for this is the "colossal threats" to the world's largest nuclear power, said Alexei Likhachev, head of Russia's state nuclear agency Rosatom. "The nuclear shield, which is also a sword, is a guarantee of our sovereignty," Likhachev said. "We understand today that in the coming years the nuclear shield must only be improved."

Zelensky hints at more counterattacks

According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine must abandon its constant defense against Russian attacks and go on the offensive itself. "This war must end; we must put pressure on Russia," he said in a video message on the evening (21.08.). Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin understands "nothing but power and pressure."
