Kazakhstan begins work on first modern nuclear power plant

Kazakhstan has taken the first step towards building its first modern nuclear power plant, starting engineering studies in the village of Ulken in the Almaty region.

Earlier in August, the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Agency and Russia's Rosatom held a ceremony to mark the official start of construction of the nuclear power plant, which began with soil exploration.

"This project is a strategic choice for Kazakhstan, a driver of long-term economic growth for the region and the country as a whole," said the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Agency, Almasadam Satkalityev.

He stressed that the project would create jobs and modern infrastructure for this remote village, with about $1 billion earmarked for schools, hospitals and other social facilities, along with the estimated $14-15 billion cost of the power plant itself.

Exploration work includes drilling test wells and analyzing soil samples to determine the site's seismic stability and environmental suitability.

This exploration phase will include drilling at least 50 wells, with depths of 30-120 meters.

These studies, which will last 18 months, will guide the final decision on the exact location of the power plant. /CNA
