First conviction of its kind/ A soldier in New Zealand is accused of espionage

A New Zealand soldier who tried to spy for a foreign power has admitted attempted espionage in a military court, in the first such conviction in the country's history.

The soldier's name was not publicly disclosed, nor was the country to which he sought to pass the secrets.

Court-martial documents said the soldier believed he was engaging with a foreign agent in 2019 when he attempted to communicate military information, including base telephone directories and maps, security vulnerability assessments, his ID card and login details to a military network.

The wording of the charge said his actions were likely to harm the security or defence of New Zealand./CNA
