The threat of a hybrid war/ Von der Leyen: Europe must act, the aim is to divide

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen today made an urgent call for Europe to increase defense capabilities to protect the union from the threat of hybrid warfare.

The statement comes after several countries have faced air intrusions, cyberattacks and damage to underwater cables.

"These events are well-organized by Russia. They are aimed at the division of the European Union, as well as at weakening our support for Ukraine. Two incidents are a coincidence, but not three, five, ten. This is a deliberate and targeted gray area campaign against Europe. Europe must respond," Von der Leyen declared.

The EU is expected to build an 'army' of drones and its completion is supposed to occur by 2030.

Meanwhile, at the Brussels summit to be held on October 23, 24 and 25, EU leaders will try to agree on a roadmap aimed at preparing the bloc to defend itself against Russian threats in the coming years.

EU officials believe Russia could attack another European country within the next three to five years. /CNA
