Just like a year ago, this tourist season, bars, restaurants and hotels in the south of the country are facing a labor shortage, offering salaries for seasonal workers in positions such as cleaners or dishwashers of up to 1,200 euros per month.
According to announcements from employment agencies, in tourist areas such as Ksamil, Saranda and Dhërmi, employees are being sought for several service positions.
The highest demand is for hotel and resort cleaners with salaries ranging from 100,000 to 120,000 lekë and dishwashers with salaries of 120,000 lekë per month. Businesses in “Shkëmbi i Kavajës” are also looking for beach umbrella workers with salaries of up to 80,000 lekë per month.
For all service positions, in addition to a monthly salary, businesses also provide free accommodation and food.
Employment agency executives claim that this year offers from businesses are about 20% higher compared to a year ago.
According to Albana Uku, head of an agency for the employment of women in sanitary and dishwasher positions, the demand is mainly concentrated in hotels in Vlora, Saranda and the Potami area. She points out that salaries for these positions range from 800 to 1,000 euros per month.
"Last year we had a high number of mediation contracts for seasonal employment of women in the south of the country, and in some cases even in Durrës. Many of them, who previously emigrated to work as nannies with salaries of around 1,000 euros per month, found seasonal employment in the country more profitable, with salaries from 800 to 1,000 euros.
The trend for women's employment in the south of the country is high for this tourist season as well. The business offer so far has increased by 20% compared to last year. This upward trend is expected to continue throughout the tourist season.
"Many service businesses are looking to hire local women for cleaning or dishwashers. 75% of the business demand is for hiring locals during the tourist season, 25% of the demand is for foreign workers," she claimed.
Even during the tourist season, businesses in the south of the country offered seasonal employment in the service sector with salaries of up to 2,500 euros per month.
Last year, the highest paid position according to job advertisements was for the general chef and sushi chef, with a maximum salary of 220 thousand to 250 thousand lek per month. The lowest paid compared to other positions in Dhërmi was the head of the hall with a monthly salary of 120 thousand lek to 150 thousand lek.
The Chairman of the Bars and Restaurants Association, Enri Jahja, previously told Monitor that the increase in salaries for service sector employees in bars and restaurants in the south by an average of 20% during the 2025 season compared to the previous season is a consequence of a broken balance between demand and supply in the labor market, where demand is low and in many cases without professional training, while supply is high.
