US extends national emergency for Western Balkans

The US has decided to extend the national emergency for the Western Balkans.

The official announcement was made public in the Federal Register, and will be transmitted to the US Congress.

The national emergency was first declared on June 26, 2001 by the then President through Executive Order 13219, to address extraordinary threats to the national security and foreign policy of the United States arising from extreme violence and actions that obstructed the implementation of international agreements in North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo.

This status has been updated over the years; in 2003 with Executive Order 13304, in 2021 with Executive Order 14033, which expanded its scope to the entire territory of the former Yugoslavia and Albania, due to widespread corruption and the undermining of democratic institutions, in January 2025 with Executive Order 14140, to address ongoing efforts to challenge the sovereignty of countries in the region and evade US sanctions.

According to the latest update made on June 24, 2025, the situation in the Western Balkans continues to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States. In this context, the US President has decided to extend for another year the state of national emergency, which includes sanctions and other measures for individuals who undermine peace, stability, and democracy in the region./CNA
