An idea started by the young Albanian-American originally from Devolli, Alessio Bejleri, has become a reality on the eve of the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The student at the College of Staten Island proposed the return of the giant American flag over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, a tradition last performed in 1976, during the 200th anniversary of US independence.

After the support of New York City officials, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) approved the project and built a new reinforced flagpole system, which will be flown on July 4th to welcome historic ships entering New York Harbor as part of the America250 celebrations.

The initiative of the young man from Devolli has been praised as an important contribution to the restoration of one of New York's most iconic patriotic symbols. /CNA
